■ How did slippers become so common in Japan?

In Japan, it’s customary to remove outdoor shoes at the entrance to keep floors clean. So why wear slippers indoors? Slippers are said to have first appeared in the early Meiji era (1868–1912), when Japan opened to the world and welcomed more visitors from overseas—many of whom would step into homes or hotel rooms without removing their shoes. Slippers were devised to protect floors and tatami while graciously accommodating guests from different cultural backgrounds.
