Memories of bamboo crafts

Memories of bamboo crafts

Memories of bamboo crafts on a tiny island in the Philippines.

I love local traditional handicrafts, and I have especially good memories of bamboo crafts from the Philippines.
I lived for a short while on a tiny island in the Philippines, and there were bamboo craftspeople who made their living making bamboo furniture and accessories on a small scale. They used bamboo which grew naturally in the forests there to create beautiful resort-style furniture and sold them in cities such as Manila.
The village had a tiny population, and there was very little work available, but these people supported themselves and sent their children to school with the cash they earned by making craftwork.
And I was touched by the kindness and cheerful way of the Filipino people who enjoyed their lives and never forgot to smile.
My wonderful memories of this tiny village always fill me with universal respect and appreciation for all artisans of such handicrafts.
